Why your donation page is failing your donors (and how to fix it).

Every week, I review nonprofit websites that are losing thousands of dollars a year in potential revenue. The tragedy isn't that their missions aren't compelling. The tragedy is that their donation infrastructure is actively turning people away.

When a donor clicks "Donate," they have already made the emotional decision to support your work. Your only job at that point is to not get in their way. Yet, most nonprofits build donation pages that feel like filling out a tax return.

The Three Cardinal Sins of Donation Pages

1. Asking for too much information upfront

Do you really need a donor's middle initial, phone number, and mailing address just to process a $25 one-time digital gift? Every additional field on your donation form drops your conversion rate by a measurable percentage. If you are requiring a phone number, you are losing donors.

"A donation page is not an intake form. It is a gesture of trust. Treat it like one."

2. No clear connection to impact

If your donation page simply says "Support our cause," you are missing the final push. Donors need to know what their money does. Tying specific dollar amounts to tangible outcomes ($50 provides a week of meals, $100 funds a crisis intervention session) gives donors agency and context.

3. Friction in the payment process

In 2026, if your donation page does not support Apple Pay, Google Pay, and seamless recurring billing, you are effectively telling younger donors you don't want their money. The friction of pulling out a physical credit card is often enough to make someone abandon a form.

The Fix: Rebuilding for Conversion

Your donation page is the most critical piece of infrastructure on your website. If you haven't audited it in the last two years, you are almost certainly leaving money on the table.
